Join us for the first of our new Traditional Indian Block Printing Workshops where will be teaching you how to hand print your own Fabric & Paper using large handle blocks which have come direct from the Block Printing Studios in Jaipur.

Each January when we travel to India we spend most of our time at various printing factories in the village of Bagru and Sanganer, the homes of Indian Block Printing and the extremely skilled printers. We spend our time rummaging through hundreds of traditional antique handle blocks, getting lost amongst the beautiful patterns and borders. Spending hours printing large pieces of fabric, which we can then turn into a scarf, table cloth or cushion cover. Playing around with a colours and designs, coming up with a pattern and creating something fabulous! Our aim is to recreate this very traditional form of Block Printing in our studio for you. These large handle blocks allow you to print bigger pieces of fabric in a detailed designs with ease, a result you just can’t achieve with the small blocks.

The day will start with guests arriving and getting to know each other while we pass around refreshments before we start the day, once everyone has arrived we will run through a little bit of Block Printing history, sharing with you our experiences with this form of traditional printing and our time in India. We will give you a detailed demonstration on how to use the printing blocks, after which you will go away and start having ago yourself. For the first couple of hours you will be testing out different techniques such as 2 colour printing, mitered corners and repeat patterns, building up a collection of fabrics whilst testing out different designs and colours. Once your feeling confident with the large blocks we will move onto printing an array of beautiful papers in a mixture of patterns and colours. We will stop for lunch around 1pm for an hour in which time you are also free to browse our shop and purchase block printing supplies. After lunch you will move onto printing a large piece of fabric, you can choose how big this might be depending on what you want to do with it- we suggest printing a piece of fabric which you can turn into an envelope cushion cover, wall hanging or table runner (these bits of fabric will need to be sewn to finish them off, we can provide you with instructions on how to do this, or we offer a sewing service for a small additional price) or you can print ready made fabric items such as set of Napkins, Scarf, Tea Towel or Lampshade cover.

We have plenty of samples to show you to help with ideas on what you can make along with what colours and designs work together. Once you have printed your large piece of fabric we allow it to dry for a short period of time before we are done for the day. You will leave with a fantastic selection of block printed fabrics & papers along with the confidence and knowledge to carry on block printing at home.

We will provide you plenty of Tea, Coffee and cake throughout the day. All your materials are provided within the workshop cost, and additional fabric can be purchased for a small fee if needed. All you are required to bring is a packed lunch.

After booking we will email you with a confirmation, then a week prior to the workshop you will receive workshop details.
